What is Kava

About Kava

What is Kava used for?

What is Kava used for?

Kava plant. Only the roots are harvested to make kava tea. The leaves of the Kava plant are toxic.

Kava comes from the roots of the Piper Methysticum plant found in South Pacific islands including Vanuatu, Fiji, Hawaii, Samoa, and Tonga. It takes five years for a Kava plant to properly mature before it can be prepared as a cold tea. Kava contains active ingredients known as kavalactones which are highly concentrated in lateral roots. These kavalactones produce the positive effects that kava is known for.

Traditional kava ceremony

Kava tea has been used for thousands of years, playing a central role in tribal ceremonies, celebrations, social situations and to resolve conflicts.

Kava consumers report mental relaxation, stress relief, mood elevation, relaxed muscles, sociability, and sleep improvement. Another benefit is that one remains mentally clear, unlike with alcohol. There's an old Hawaiian proverb that says,

“A man who drinks kava is still a man, but a man who drinks alcohol becomes a beast.” Come try kava and see for yourself!

Traditionally, kava was made by young female virgins chewing the roots and spitting them out into a tanoa bowl (large wooden bowl used for preparing and serving kava). This method created a paste that was mixed with water and served to the men in the tribe, starting with the chief. Don’t worry, we use hygienic methods these days! At Tiki Tide Kava Bar, our premium kava roots are mixed with specially filtered water, then kneaded and strained until the tea is of the highest potency for the best effects. When presented with kava, clap once and yell ‘Bula!’ (Fijian for hello, life & happiness). Drink the kava in one gulp if possible, then clap three more times when finished.
